Adding a Blog page

Modified on Thu, 18 Oct, 2018 at 12:05 PM

Installation

1. Create a new page and name it "Blog, news, posts, etc" (for more information on this please see "How to Create a Page")

2. Add a "Blog app" to the new page:

Click on "Apps" in the Shelf at the bottom of your browser and look for "Blog".

Drag and drop the app where you want to place your Blog.

Editing

Click on the pencil (edit.png) in the top right corner of the app to edit it.

You can now start editing the sample post by clicking "Manage Posts", and then "Edit", or add more blog posts by clicking "New Post".

If you want to edit the blog title or post title, double click on it and start typing. Same with images, click to upload a new image and crop/resize if need be.

Unique URL

Now, every time you publish a post, a unique URL is created for it. This is also known as a “permalink”.

A unique URL gives you the possibility to share a link that will take your visitors to a specific post. So they don’t have to get to the general page where all your posts are summarized and click on one in order to get to it.

A post’s permalink will look like the following:

yoursite.com/posts/your-category/your-post

This permalinks are automatically generated but you can change the defaults permalink. It’s located right below the post title.

You can edit the post permalink right below the title by clicking on the field shown above and typing. Please note that spaces will automatically get converted to dashes (-)

Categories

A taxonomy of topics is a helpful way of organizing your blog. You can group similar posts together in one category. While you can have as many categories as you want, depending on your content and writing approach, probably 5 or 6 different categories will do.

To add a category, select “New Category” on the left side of the panel.

Select “New Category” on the left to add one

To assign a category to a post, select one on the right side of the panel. The categories will be available in the "edit post" view.

Select a category from the list and click “Save" on the top right after you’re finished editing

Commenting

Comments are also an essential part of any blog. The blog app doesn’t have a native way of providing comments, but you can use any popular third party system to enable them on your blog.

For example, try Disqus. You can sign up for a free account and embed the code they provide on the blog app’s settings.

You can change the app settings by clicking "Settings" on the left:

To enable comments paste the code you've received from the third party service in the space provided. Make sure you enable comments by ticking the checkbox as well.

Search Engine Optimization Tips

There are a few things that you can do to enhance your posts for search engines. For example, since you now have categories, and they are visible in the URL (yoursite.com/posts/your-category/your-post), you can use keywords related to your site there (instead of something more general or broad).

The same applies to the “URL Name” under the blog settings, and the “post slug” under each post. URL Name affects the URL of your main blog path: yoursite.com/blog/your-category/your-post . Post slug is similar to a post's permalink and will be at the end of your URL (yoursite.com/posts/your-category/post-sample).

The last place where you can optimize is the post content itself. Although you should keep in mind not to create content that is crammed full of keywords, if your site has too many of your targeted keywords, to a point where they seem forced, it may negatively affect your ranking. Search engines penalize over optimized or "keyword stuffed" pages.

Writing for people should be always the primary focus while worrying and optimizing for search engines should come later.

Important:

Whenever you create a new page on your website, you need to make sure to submit that page to Google. So for that, you'll want to create a Google Search Console account, submit your website to it and crawl the page that you just created:

To submit a URL to Google’s index via Search Console, follow the steps below:

  • Perform a fetch (or fetch and render) request for a URL using Fetch as Google.
  • Click “Request indexing” next to the fetch in the fetch history table.
  • Select whether to crawl only that single URL, or that URL plus its direct links.
  • Click “Submit” to queue your request.

Google allows site owners to submit up to 10 individual URLs per day.

Note that recrawling is not immediate or guaranteed. It also takes several days for a successful request to be granted.

Restrictions and Notes

  • You can’t have more than one blog app on the same page. If you need more than one blog app, you will need to create a separate, independent page for it.
  • On the main blog page, individual posts are truncated, this is indicated with ellipses instead of the more traditional "Read More" link. Clicking on the title of the blog will take you to the full post.
